Chapter 7

READY, SET, GROW!

After two days of rain, the sun finally broke through the clouds. Ms. Bird greeted everyone when they arrived, then stood at the front of the class. “The sun is out, and it’s time to plant!” she announced, holding up a packet of seeds.

“Yes!” Finley said. “I can’t wait to get my hands dirty!”

“I don’t want to get my hands dirty,” Olivia said. “I just painted my nails last night.” She pulled a pair of purple polka-dot gardening gloves out of her backpack. “Luckily, I came prepared.”

Finley raised her hand. “What are we planting?” she asked.

“Let’s find out,” Ms. Bird said. “I need a member of each group to come up and pick a packet of seeds from my watering can. Read the back of your packet, look at the planting chart I’ve drawn on the board, and make a similar chart in your journal. Be sure to include today’s date, the type of seeds, planting depth, seed spacing, and germination time — that’s how long they take to start growing.”

“I hope we get carrots,” Finley said.

“I want beets,” Olivia said. “They’re the prettiest purple.”

“I’ll be happy with anything,” Henry said. “I’ve never met a veggie I didn’t like.”

“This group looks ready.” Ms. Bird pointed to Frances, Arpin, and Luis. “Send someone over to pick your seeds.”

Luis jumped up and headed to the teacher’s desk. Ms. Bird held the watering can high as Luis reached in.

“No peeking,” she warned.

Luis fished around and pulled out a packet. “Beets!” he said, bounding back to his group.

“Looks like he beet us to the beets,” Henry said.

Olivia frowned. “Those should have been mine. No one appreciates purple like I do.”

“Next up, Tyra’s group,” Ms. Bird said.

Tyra picked a packet and held it up. “Spinach!”

Harper’s group went after Tyra and got lettuce. Amelia’s group picked peas.

Finley sat as straight and still as she could. We have to be next. I need carrots.

“Will’s group,” Ms. Bird said.

Will fished around in the watering can and held up a packet. “Carrots!” he said, grinning. “I love carrots!” Kate and Lia gave him a thumbs-up.

Finley slumped in her chair. “So do I.”

“It’s okay,” Henry told her. “We’ll still get to eat them.”

“And last but not least, Finley’s group,” Ms. Bird said cheerily.

Finley shuffled to the front of the class. Then she held her breath and reached into the watering can.

“What did you get?” Henry asked as she pulled out the last packet of seeds.

Finley flipped it over and looked at the picture on the front. Her heart sank. “Radishes.”
